On being worthy

October 26, 2007

Worthy. Being worthy. Feeling worthy. It’s a weighty topic. How do you become worthy? To whom? With my son’s engagement, I began to reflect on how we choose who is worthy. I thought about all the choices we make based on worthiness – who we marry, who we vote for, who we root for and the ultimate decision – who we knit for. One of our Woolpack customers, Suzi, first verbalized of this concept of being “knitworthy.”

To me, there are many facets to being knitworthy. Sometimes you know ahead of time that someone is knitworthy. They always notice your own hand knit pieces, They want to “pat” you. They drop subtle hints about favorite colors. You know this person appreciates the time dedicated to knitting. Other times you might have a new family member or acquaintance or coworker and giving them a hand knit piece would be your way of showing your pleasure. Knitters put so much joy into planning their gift projects; considering the perfect color, a style, picking the fiber, special care requirements (will they or won’t they want to hand wash). All the many thoughts and hours in the actual knitting or crochet. Sadly, sometimes we misjudge. A person once thought of as knitworthy falls from grace. Your work may be underappreciated. You visit and the piece is tossed in a pile on the floor. You’re told that it is being saved for a special occasion (which never happens). I can almost see you shaking your head. you won’t make that mistake a second time. By no means is this a reflection on your own self-worth.

The other part about being “knitworthy” is that a person who is not “knitworthy” can still be the most wonderful person on the earth. They probably don’t even know that you consider them “not knitworthy.” It’s our secret.
