Madonna returns and washing wool on the hoof

August 27, 2007

August has seemed longer than usual. Madonna, our ace instructor has been visiting family in Newfoundland, Canada. She is normally teaching six class a week so I have been valiently trying to fill her shoes for the past month while other staff members have been filling mine. I can’t wait to see what she has been working on over vacation. For details on her upcoming classes, please go to www.woolpackyarn.com or click on Woolpack Yarn Shop under Blogroll to the right.

Daughter Lesley spent the weekend getting ready for the Woodstock Fair. She will be showing her sheep in competition in the livestock section of the fair. You may have seen pictures of her at the shop working on her sheep. First she gets them on the blocking stand which is very similar to a dog grooming stand. Then she washes them with Orvis paste and hoses them off. Like dogs, some sheep like this more than others. Next she trims the hooves and clean the armpits (the judges always check there). Then she spends hours with trimming sheers clipping them up like their at an exclusive salon. When they’re done, she puts a sheep blanket (like a horse blank) on them to try to keep them as clean as possible until the show. The vet was out and gave Lesley the health papers for traveling over state lines and she’s ready to go.

The Woodstock Fair is held in Woodstock, Conn. in the northeast corner of the state and is easy to get to heading south our of Worcester. It’s a great place to spend part of Labor Day weekend. The link to their website is also under the Blogroll on the right.
